In conjunction with today’s inaugural flight from South Bend Regional Airport to Phoenix-Mesa, AZ, the St. Joseph County Airport Authority presented the fifth annual “Stakeholder of the Year” Award to Allegiant Air, a subsidiary of Allegiant Travel Company (NASDAQ: ALGT). This award was presented to Sabrina LoPiccolo, manager public relations/promotions for Allegiant Air and Christy Ruth, Allegiant Air, SBN station manager, at a press conference celebrating the airline’s newest destination from SBN.
The Stakeholder of the Year award is presented to the organization which best reflects the Authority’s goals of maximizing the safety, service, and effectiveness of the South Bend Regional Airport for the traveling public and the community at large. The 2009 award is being presented to Allegiant by the Board of the St. Joseph County Airport Authority in recognition of Allegiant’s contribution to the mission of the Authority and for its dedication to providing the residents of Michiana with affordable air service.
“Allegiant’s fares opened our airport to hundreds of thousands of new travelers. More non-stop destinations, combined with competitive prices, jet service, travel agency support, and affordable parking have created tremendous value for passengers in Michiana,” said John Schalliol, executive director of the South Bend Regional Airport.
In 2005, Allegiant Air inaugurated non-stop service to Las Vegas and Sanford/Orlando, Florida. This was followed by the successful initiation of non-stop service in 2006 to the Tampa Bay, Florida area by the carrier. Allegiant’s passenger growth continued in 2009 and today the airline initiated service to Phoenix/Mesa, AZ.
Since 2005, Allegiant has enplaned over 229,000 thousand passengers in South Bend. It is estimated that the revenue generated to the Airport due to Allegiant’s operations has far exceeded $5.1 million. Through its substantial investment, Allegiant has demonstrated its continued commitment to the growth and progress of the airport and community at large.
The “Stakeholder of the Year” award was initiated in 2005. In the five years of its existence the Airport Authority has recognized new investment in the Airport by our stakeholders exceeding $7.5 million. Allegiant is one of over 50 businesses and organizations operating at the airport. These businesses employ an estimated 750 workers and represent a yearly economic impact on the community of in excess of $433,000,000.

On November 18, 2009 a contract was awarded to Majority Builders by the Board of Directors of the St. Joseph County Airport Authority for a major expansion to the South Bend Regional Airport Terminal. Construction has begun and is expected to conclude by 2011.
When completed, the new 45,000 square foot concourse expansion will include 5 new gates, dining room, lounge and gift shop and a children's room. This much-needed renovation will also consolidate passenger screening operations to a single expanded location. According to John Schalliol, Airport Executive Director; funding for the project will be derived from airline ticket taxes paid by the flying public and not from property taxes.
The expansion will extend from the east side of the Concourse 'A' Holding Room past the existing Concourse 'C' walkway, which will be demolished. An arching translucent panel roof will provide bright daylight and large windows to share a clear view of ramp and runway operations.
The Dining Room and Lounge will feature deli meals, snacks and drinks similar to the existing airport services as well as beverages and snacks already screened to take along on outbound flights. The Children's Room will feature airport-themed toys and displays in a soft furnished room where parents can let children burn off some energy before boarding the plane.
Construction will take place in several phases to allow uninterrupted operation of all airport flights. Four renderings depicting the future expansion for Concourse 'A' have been completed. "These renderings will help the public understand what the new terminal will look and feel like; Viridian Design did an excellent job bringing our designs to life," stated project architect Timothy J. Wall, AIA. The expansion design team collaborating with the Airport consists of: Ken Herceg & Associates, Inc., (architect and civil engineer); Primary Engineering, Inc., (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineer); and CE Solutions, Inc. (structural engineer).
