“Sculpture at the Airport 2008-2010”

Recently installed on the grounds of the South Bend Regional Airport are eight new sculptures commissioned by and in conjunction with the South Bend Museum of Art.

“Sculpture at the Airport” is a collaborative project between the South Bend Museum of Art and the South Bend Regional airport. Initiated in 1998, the program brings exciting work from local and regional artists to the airport grounds, for a period of two years where it is seen by thousands of travelers. The goal of the collaboration is to integrate art into public spaces.

The three-dimensional works of art are selected by the South Bend Museum of Art from both new and established local and regional artists. Installation of the objects is provided by the South Bend Regional Airport. The sculptures are installed on 10’ by 10’ concrete pads located along the entrance drive to the airport. According to museum planners, “The artwork provides a sense of calm to harried travelers, and eases the apprehension that accompanies today’s airline travel”.
